先日ジェミニ天文台が赤外線を用いた系外惑星の撮影に成功したというニュースが流れたが、こういうのは連鎖することが多く、ハッブルが可視光での撮影に成功した。
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has taken the first visible-light snapshot of a planet circling another star.
Estimated to be no more than three times Jupiter's mass, the planet, called Fomalhaut b, orbits the bright southern star Fomalhaut, located 25 light-years away in the constellation Piscis Australis, or the "Southern Fish."

上記のサイトに行くと、写真や解説図もあります。2004年に撮った写真と2006年に撮った写真とで位置がずれており、そこから軌道半径は107億マイル（約170億キロ）で太陽と土星との距離の約10倍と判明。理論値より明るいことから、輪を持っているかもしれないと推測されている。地球から25光年の距離だから、探査機を飛ばすのも今世紀中には可能になるかもしれない。
しかし、可視光で写真が撮れるとは予想していなかった。ハッブル後継機である"James Webb Space Telescope"なら、内惑星が見える可能性もあるとか。楽しみ。
