A work at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC once thought to be by Vermeer is now regarded as a fake. New research shows that Girl with a Flute is not from the hand of the Dutch master, although it was probably made in his studio.

残存数が非常に少ないことで知られるフェルメール。死後に一旦忘れられたという経緯もあり、一部の作品については「本人作か？」と疑義が呈されていた。
本人でない可能性が高いと言われていたのが、ナショナルギャラリーの「赤い帽子の女」で、展示もフェルメールかなぐらいの書き方だった。
今回は、「赤い帽子の女」と似た作風の「フルートを持つ女」。調査の結果、本人ではないだろうという結論になったそうだ。
